The Consequence of Moving Early
Qualifying secures a rider their specific grid slot, but converting that starting position into race progress requires perfect timing when the red lights turn off. Under official MotoGP jump start penalty rules, moving before the start signal is classified in the FIM regulations as anticipating the start and triggers an immediate sanction decided by the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel.
Serving the Double Long Lap
Rather than an instant pit lane detour, the standard sanction for anticipating the start is two Long Lap Penalties, enforced in both Sprint events and full Grand Prix races. To clear the penalty, the competitor must run through the track's dedicated asphalt detour loop on two distinct laps. Taking this route typically costs roughly two to four seconds per pass, frequently negating any starting advantage and dropping the rider several spots down the running order.
Signalling and Failure to Comply
Riders are alerted to the penalty via dashboard notifications showing L LAP X2 alongside yellow lights, backed by trackside boards and pit-wall screens. If a competitor repeatedly fails to complete both loops, stewards will escalate the sanction to a pit-lane ride-through under the 60 km/h speed limit or levy an added time penalty of up to two minutes after the race.
