The Procedure and Window for Compliance
When stewards assess a double Long Lap penalty during a Grand Prix, the sanction requires the competitor to travel through an extended asphalt loop positioned outside a designated turn. Understanding how MotoGP double long lap penalties are served helps explain why an offender loses track position across separate laps rather than taking both detours at once. The requirement must be completed across two distinct laps, and the official compliance window grants the rider five laps from the first crossing of the finish line after the dashboard alert is sent.
While negotiating the detour, the rider must stay fully within the painted white corridor lines, refrain from overtaking any rivals inside the zone, and rejoin the main circuit safely without disrupting approaching traffic. Straying beyond the corridor boundaries can cause stewards to order the loop repeated or apply an additional penalty. If caution signals or yellow flags wave over that sector of the track, riders are prohibited from entering the penalty lane, and each unusable lap automatically extends the five-lap window.
Consequences of Delays and Noncompliance
A double Long Lap penalty does not convert automatically to added time simply because a rider delays taking the detour. If the competitor fails to clear both required loops within the allotted five-lap allowance, race direction escalates the sanction to an immediate pit lane ride-through. The rider must then pass through the pit lane at the mandated speed limit without halting.
Should a rider ignore that subsequent ride-through and fail to enter the pit lane within three laps of notification, stewards disqualify the competitor using a black flag. Equivalent time penalties are kept for separate circumstances, such as when an infraction occurs too late in the event for signals to be given before the chequered flag, or if an interrupted race is not resumed.
